6 signs of a safe app for a young child

A simple checklist for parents before downloading any app for a child from age 2: ads, purchases, data, internet and locks.

Published

Young children tap anything that shines, so the app they play in should be closed off on every side. Here are six things to check before you download.

1. No ads

Ads interrupt play and can take a child somewhere unsuitable in a single tap.

2. No in-app purchases

Or at least purchases behind a parent lock. Check the store page under In-App Purchases.

3. Collects no data

On the App Store, open App Privacy on the app's page. The best answer is Data Not Collected.

4. Works offline

An app that needs no internet doesn't open web pages or load content you haven't seen.

5. A locked parent area

Settings and links should sit behind a question a child can't answer alone, such as a sum.

6. Made for their age

On the App Store, look for the Kids category and an age band such as 5 and Under. Those apps must follow stricter rules from Apple.
